How to choose stream after class 10? Science, Commerce & Humanities

Choosing the stream after class 10 is a decision that most students struggle to take. Given the array of options, it definitely becomes a daunting task to pick the right career path. While some students and parents have a clear understanding of what subjects need to be chosen post 10th board exams, many depend on the board results to make the decision.

However, in the current scenario, where the class 10 board exam stands canceled owing to the pandemic; those depending on the result are facing a predicament.

To help students and parents choose the stream among Science, Commerce, & Humanities, we’ve got some very important tips from Ashish Arora Sir – Academic Mentor, ALLEN Career Institute.

For selecting the right stream, you need to take care of the following points:

Get over the traditional mindset: Mostly it is seen that students who score high are always advised to pursue science and the ones scoring less are suggested to opt for the non-science subjects. However, there have been cases where students with lesser scores have proved their mettle in the science stream and achieved great results in the pre-medical and pre-engineering exams. Similarly, students who scored very high excelled in non-science fields. Hence, it is important that you don’t rely on the traditional mindset but analyze your skills.

Judging your capabilities: To know whether you should opt for a science or non-science stream, you need to judge your capabilities. And for this, you need to take care of the following points:

  • If you are scoring less than 55% or 50% then it is advisable that you choose humanities as the stream. Science won’t likely be the right fit for you. You will be able to perform better and enhance further in the humanities field. Science is a subject where you need to have strong logical manipulation and curiosity which is something very difficult to develop strongly after the age of 14-15 years.
  • If you have scored more than 60%, judge your mental ability and logical manipulation skills. If these skills are strong and you have the curiosity factor then choose science.
  • If you have strong memory skills; you possess the ability to memorize things in a lesser time span then you can choose either commerce or humanities. However, chances are high that you will perform better in humanities because of the strong memory skills.
  • Commerce becomes the right choice for you if your inclination towards mathematics is good and you aren’t curious at the theoretical level.
