Hopes for the Poor: Sojat porter’s son working in Google

Ramchandra Sankhala - software engineer in Google

A son of porter from Sojat town of Rajasthan, Ramchandra Sankhala, is an ex-student of the ALLEN Career Institute, alumni of IIT Roorkee and working as a software engineer in Google with an annual salary package of Rs 36 lakh. He is now encouraging poor students to realize their dreams.

A 25-year-old Ramchandra is pursuing research in Google. He said, during his recent Kota visit to encourage students of a coaching institute, that his father Tejaram Sankhala and mother Reema Devi worked as daily wage porters in Sojat town (Pali district) to run their family of 3 kids.

While living in a kaccha house with a younger sister and a younger brother, Ramchandra studied in Hindi medium school and attained 70% marks in class 12 in 2009 after which his father took a loan for his further studies. He stated, “As I was interested in seeking admission in IIT, hence I arrived in Kota and took a coaching for IIT-JEE from Allen Career Institute of Kota”.

During his studies, a retired judicial officer Ashok Gupta helped him financially as he had contacts with ALLEN too. Ramchandra then cracked IIT-JEE and got 1680 All India Rank (AIR) after which he got cash awards from his coaching institute and later got admitted in IIT-Roorkee and obtained a B.Tech degree in 2013.

Sh. Brajesh Maheshwari, Director of the ALLEN Career Institute, Kota, said that students like Ramchandra Sankhala are an inspiration for those who hail from poor backgrounds.

Ramchandra now wants to shift to the United States of America this year, where he will probably either work at Google headquarter or join Facebook for pursuing research on a global platform.

He has now kept a tutor to teach his illiterate parents in Sojat.

Last year, Ramchandra had taken a leave of one month from Google and taught inmates at an orphanage in a village near Sojat.
